Art from the Garden, Outdoor Artwork, Did You Know? Tips for Artists

Hello Reader,

Now is the time to stop by a local roadside fruit and vegetable stand. I was driving by one of my faves yesterday and didn't stop due to traffic. All that fresh sweet corn, peaches, and cut flowers grown locally - such a beautiful sight and a treat right now!

It inspired me to get outside more and even go back there with my paint kit and indulge in painting en plein air. Huh? What's en plein air? Read about it Here. (This website is a great resource for anyone interested in art. The Art Story website is full of info on art history, art movements, styles, concepts, and famous artist stories.)

Painting Outdoors

If you want to experience painting outdoors there are a couple of free en plein air groups that meet regularly. It's fun to meet with fellow artists and learn from one another. One group meets almost every Wednesday from 10 am to 1 pm. Next week on August 7 they will meet at a favorite spot for photographers and 2D creators: Ada Covered Bridge: 7490 Thornapple River Dr SE, Ada, MI 49301

Here's another group called Plein Air Painters. They meet on Tuesdays from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. Their next session is on August 6 at Windmill Island, 270 S. River Ave., Holland. It's free admission for artists. No need to sign up for either of these events. Just show up with your art stuff. Here's a web page with lots of tips and info on what to bring.

Did You Know?

Smart Tips by Susan: A drop of dish soap added to water-based paint will prevent your brush from dragging. If you need to thin your paint for some techniques, dish soap will also prevent bleeding and water droplets from forming. Use it whenever painting long lines with a liner brush or making dots with the tip of a round brush.

The event is full but we have a couple of artists who had to cancel early due to scheduling conflicts. Now you have another chance to get into this favorite show!

Here's the LINK for the Application Form for Art in the Park Saugatuck. This year's event is scheduled for September 14. It's a one day art festival with live Americana style music. The artists and their assistants are treated with help unloading and loading, booth sitting, breakfast, lunch and refreshments.

Keep Creating and Enjoy the Summer Weather!
