Attention Art Lovers, Jon McDonald, News on Commissions, Art Retreats

Hello Reader,

News on Commissioned Art

As you likely know, I have been talking about commissioned art lately with hopes to start a new pilot program to share my knowledge and experience as a commissioned artist. There are many ways to sell art and that is what we mostly talk about here at Artist-E. I have sold art on many levels but commissions have been my bread and butter. If you are interested in learning about how to get commissions or know anyone who might be, please check out this Quick Questionnaire on Jotform:

Talking to Jon McDonald

Just a few days ago I interviewed Jon McDonald about art commissions. Since he is a prolific painter with experience in taking commissions, I figured he would know a lot about the subject. I was right! Not only is he a great conversationalist, he is willing to share his knowledge liberally.

Jon recently retired from his professorship at Kendall College of Art and Design (KCAD) and he is now focusing on city landscapes. His work can be seen on Facebook where he posts something new almost every day: https://www.facebook.com/jon.mcdonald.129

During our conversation I was especially intrigued by his emphasis on the need for confidence, something that most artists lack. He said, "Students do not have it."

He also added, "Artists need to be encouraged to learn how to promote themselves and have confidence. They need to be out there in the public eye and establish a persona, a style that people will be attracted to."

Jon also shared his advice for commissions. "Let the customer tell you their price because it will likely be higher than you think. If not, then start negotiating. I make sure the customer tells me what they want and write a contract with a lawyer."
