Setting Goals with Harriet Tubman, Edmond Lewis and Georgia O'Keeffe

Hello Reader,

"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." Harriet Tubman

African American Culture and Art

I heard this quote recently and thought about how this woman accomplished so much over her lifetime. Tubman struggled through much adversity as a slave and eventually escaped and helped many more slaves find freedom. She also makes me think of other notable African Americans including Edmonia Lewis.

Lewis was African American and Chippewa Native American, born in 1844. I may have talked about her before but I am especially in awe at how she became an internationally known marble sculptor. Her storyis compelling for the desire and drive to achieve her goals.

Set A Realistic Goal

Georgia O'Keefe said, "You get whatever accomplishment you are willing to declare."

By setting goals you are declaring to yourself what work needs to be accomplished. Telling someone else is a good way to get commitment to follow through. Think how about how and where your artwork needs to be shown. Apply for the opportunities to exhibit and ask for critiques. Having artwork on display is a goal point and worthy of a portfolio mention. Even if the artwork does not sell it is a feather in your cap to say I was accepted and exhibited in this place.

For example, I was an ArtPrize artist for 11 different years and only sold my piece about every other year. Each of these ArtPrize projects took about 3 months to design, create and exhibit. Many assistants were needed to help with construction, transportation and exhibiting. The value of going through this arduous process is in the exposure. Now I have a huge portfolio of these exhibitions and have many ways to use that material and experience.

Take your next step!

Sincerely,

Anna Donahue Art

Hello Reader, Commissioned Art Commissions are a totally different way to sell artwork. The traditional way to market and sell artwork is to find the buyers after the artwork is created. Most working artists have lots of inventory waiting to be sold but with commissions the artwork is sold before it's created. Whether you are interested in finding out more about art commissions or not, I would like to get your feedback for future projects on teaching the business side of art. Please take a...
